A sweet, golden, delicious liquid produced by honeybees using the nectar of various flowers is the favourite of all health-conscious sweet lovers. It is considered the healthiest sugar substitute and is thus the most demanding natural sweetener. This liquid is none other than honey. Honey is frequently promoted as a sugar substitute, owing to its multiple health advantages and antioxidant content. While some argue that honey is a tasty and wholesome method to fulfill your sweet craving, others consider it as nothing more than a sugary treat.

Benefits of honey

Honey is primarily sugar with vitamins, amino acids, minerals and antioxidants.Honey has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties in addition to its usage as a natural sweetener. It comes with a lot of advantages and benefits, including the following:

Antioxidants & Nutrition Honey is abundant in various vital antioxidants, such as phenolic acids and flavonoids, that may improve in overall health. Can honey be harmful as well?

Though honey is considered a honey material for consumption and provides multiple benefits to the body in various ways. But still honey is not for all, only from an age above 1 year a child should start to take honey. There are present certain side-effects associated with the consumption or usage of honey. Some of such side effects are mentioned below.

Botulism: Honey is made from the nectar of flowers, carried by the honey bees. So, it contains certain dust particles as well. These dust particles may carry with them some bacteria which are responsible for causing botulism in infants. This happens because the infant's body is very delicate and lacks the resistance to fight these germs. So, better avoid giving raw honey to children below 1 year, instead, you can add them to food while cooking, this kills the bacteria and eliminates the chances of developing botulism.

May cause weight gain: Honey is found to be rich in sugar and calorie content. The sugar present in honey is very easily digestible and hence gets mixed with the blood very easily, resulting in a sudden spike in the blood sugar level. This in turn enhances the appetite of the person and as a result, causes weight gain over time.

Allergies: Though the cases of allergies due to honey consumption are rare yet they can happen. The main cause of developing allergies due to honey is the presence of honey pollen in them. These honey pollens are the mixtures of pollen grains and the digestive enzymes of honeybees. These if consumed can trigger severe allergies in some people. So, be careful before falling for excessively consuming honey in the first go.

Besides these, there are other side effects associated with the consumption of honey. These effects may vary with the person. Some of the common side-effects are:

  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Stinging on applying it topically over the skin
  • Increased rate of perspiration
  • Dizziness and enhanced heart rhythm
  • Weakness and other asthmatic symptoms

All these side effects can be detected from the beginning. Upon consumption or use only you can get to know if you are suffering from any of these. So, if you are using honey for the first time, make sure to test it on yourself with a small amount first. After that go for its regular use if you feel it is suitable for yourself.
