Eating Disorder- Meaning, signs, symptoms and cure Remedies

Do you feel like you have eaten too much for the meal and that will lead to adding extra calories to your weight? This fear of extra weight gain after every meal you complete is related to your mental health. The fear involves a different emphasis on the relation between your eating habits and body shape, weight, and looks. This, as a result, develops serious eating behaviours, which eventually start to impact the body negatively from various aspects. All these conditions and the behaviour involved are known to belong to a condition called eating disorder.

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are serious mental health illnesses, related to tenacious eating behaviours. It affects both the physical and emotional sides of a person. Unless it is treated properly on time, it causes harm to your cardiac and digestive systems along with your teeth, mouth, and bones.

Generally, eating disorders develop in the teenhood period, and most teenagers are affected by this illness due to peer pressure and surrounding attractions. But it is not only surrounded by teens, even adults who are very health conscious get affected by this.

Eating disorders involve various behaviours, and based on these behaviours, eating disorders are of multiple types. Some of the most common types of eating disorders are mentioned below.

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Binge-eating disorder
  • Rumination disorder
  • Restrictive / Avoidant food intake disorder

Is there such a thing called ‘normal eating’?

Yes, normal eating is a term used to represent your normal eating behaviour. It includes eating normal 3 to 4 meals a day, leaving extra cookies for the next day, and giving treats to yourself when you are happy. In this eating habit, you eat chosen food based on its nutrients, taste & health requirements. Besides, you avoid being restrictive about food and eat all you like but in healthy quantity and neither overeat nor undereat.

Recovery is possible!!

Recovery from severe symptoms of eating disorders is possible but is quite slow. The recovery needs a lot of patience, consistency, and time. So, if you can devote yourself to the process, you can achieve your final goal quickly. The whole process of recovery is related to the brain. Hence it's considered an essential thing to understand the relation between brain health and eating disorder. With small steps toward recovery and easy recognition of the changes experienced, you can achieve a win over the illness.

What are the recognizing signs of an eating disorder?

The easiest way to know if you are suffering from an eating disorder is by recognizing the symptoms. Each kind of eating disorder shows a distinct type of behaviour and this behavioural change can help us know our condition. Some of the prominent symptoms of some common eating disorders are mentioned below.

  • Anorexia Nervosa If you are suffering from Anorexia Nervosa then you will feel more toward ways to reduce your body weight. You will start to reduce your calorie intake a lot, perform intense exercises, and use laxatives along with intentional vomiting. All these will result in very low body weight and many severe health problems.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: This is another extremely harmful kind of eating disorder. If you are suffering from this then you will start skipping especially your afternoon meal. Meal skipping will result in overeating other meals and this will develop feelings of guilt in you which results in forceful vomiting and the use of laxatives. You yourself start body shaming yourself even if you are at a normal weight or are a little overweight.
  • Binge-eating disorder: In this kind of disorder, you eat too much during every meal. You don’t need to feel hungry to start eating but eat as per your mood. Besides, as seen in the above disorders, there are cases of you trying extensively to take out that extra food or reduce the extra calorie eaten. But you start hiding and living alone to stop bingeing.

In case you yourself are suffering from an eating disorder, then to help yourself you should follow the mentioned ways.

  • The best option is to enhance your feelings of self-love. Loving self helps to accept the way you are and avoid all the negative feelings.
  • Talk to yourself and recognize your needs. It is important to know actually what you need. This helps to identify your shortcomings and the ways you need to overcome them.
  • Talk to someone who can help you. Visit your doctor or a psychologist, they will help you to find the right thinking and way to understand the problem you are facing. Besides, they will provide you with professional methods to cure the problem.
