Cardamom- Types, Properties and Benefits

The fragrance that is loved by all somewhere comes from cardamom. It is also known as Elaichi, a commonly used kitchen commodity to add flavor and fragrance to any dessert. Besides desserts, Elaichi is also preferred by many people in normal eateries. The item is very popular due to its exceptional taste and smell.

Elaichi is considered in the list of spices coming from the Zingiberaceae family. The plants of this family are commonly native to Indonesia and the Indian subcontinent. This spice is recognized by its dark-colored seeds covered with a light green pod. For using it, the natural pods with seeds are processed and dried, they are sent for commercial uses. This famous spice has been known since the times of Ayurveda.

These all benefits provided by Elaichi account for their composition. They possess essential oils whose quality and quantity are generally a function of storage condition but our maximum of 8%. It is this essential oil that is accountable for all the flavor, smell, and benefits it possesses.

The contents of cardamom essential oil include:

  • Heptane
  • Sabinene
  • 1,8 Cuniol
  • Limonene
  •  β-phellandrene
  •  Myrcene
  • α-terpineol

the presence of these contents of elaichi varies in quantity with the type of elaichi. Generally, there are 2 types of elaichi:

  • Green Elaichi: Also known as the white elaichi, is a member of Elettaria Cardamomum spice and is found widely from India to Malaysia.
  • Black Elaichi: Also known as brown elaichi, is a member of Amomum subulatum spice and is available in eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling, and Southern Bhutan.

After being aware of the contents of cardamom, now let's look at the properties that make it advantageous for health:

  • Antimicrobial: The anti-microbial activity of cardamom comes from its ability to kill certain bacteria and fungi. It destroys the cell membrane of bacteria and prevents their growth. Thus, prevents the influence of these microorganisms on the body to a great extent.
  • Anti Cancerous: The phytochemical content of cardamom makes it beneficial to fight against cancer cells. It helps to some extent to reduce the size and weight of skin tumors.
  • Antiulcerosos: Cardamom is renowned in every household and Ayurveda for its stomach-easing and soothing effects. It helps to prevent the occurrence of ulcers in the stomachs. When combined with some other spices it works phenomenally.
  • Anti-inflammatory: The high amounts of antioxidants present in cardamom helps in lowering the inflammation of the body. It works against the free radicals present and lowers the blood pressure of an individual. Thus, by protecting the cell from damage, it protects our body.
  • Diuretic: Studies show that cardamom possesses a diuretic effect that allows it to eliminate excess water from the body. It enhances the frequency of urination and this helps to keep the heart healthy by lower blood pressure.

  • Heart: By binding all the oxidants and free radicals, elaichi helps to keep the heart-healthy. This action reduces inflammation and lowers blood pressure. Besides, it works to remove the water buildup from the body.
  • Teeth: Studies revealed that cardamom extracts help to a great extent to fight cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Mouth: Cardamom reduces the bacteria from saliva. These bacteria cause bad breath. So, their removal helps to promote oral health and fresh breath.
  • Lungs: The use of cardamom improves breathing and enhances the flow of air in the lungs. Besides, it promotes the body to fulfill oxygen requirements of the body during exercise or vigorous physical activity. The most effective way to employ cardamom for this purpose is by performing aromatherapy. This helps to relax the respiratory system.
  • Liver: Using cardamom extract, helps to a great extent to lower the elevated levels of cholesterol, triglyceride, and enzymes in the liver. This thing benefits in preventing the enlargement of the liver or cause fatty liver.
  • Digestive system: The intake of elaichi has a significant impact on the digestive system. It soothes any stomach issues. Alongside, helps to treat the problem of constipation.

Cardamom is a very renowned spice due to its aroma and flavor and the health beneficiary properties it possesses. The use of cardamom is very versatile but yet it is not for all.
