Foods for Low-Potassium Diet to treat Hyperkalemia

Hyperkalmia is a medical condition that can also be recognized as high potassium level. This condition indicates high level of potassium in blood of a human being. Potassium is indeed an important nutrient for a healthy body but as it is said that anything in excess amount can harm, so high potassium level in blood is also harmful.

What is Hyperkalemia?

When the potassium content in the blood of a human body increases, it reaches to a medical condition that is called hyperkalemia. The normal rate of potassium in blood is 3.5 - 5.0 mmol/L. When this level crosses it causes hyperkalemia.

Hyperkalemia is mainly caused due to high diet in potassium, kidney disease and the drugs that prevent the kidneys from losing potassium.

The symptoms of hyperkalemia are shortness of breathing, heart palpitations, nausea and vomiting. The symptoms are generally not recognizable. Therefore to avoid hyperkalemia, one must control the excess intake of potassium.

Foods that are low potassium for Hyperkalemia

Explore list of foods which are low in potassium levels, advised to a person suffering from Hyperkalemia.

1. Broccoli: Broccoli is one of those vegetables that are really beneficial for a good health as it has all the required nutrients. Consuming broccoli in an ample amount has never harmed anyone and for hyperkalemia it is beneficial because it has low potassium level.

  • Method to prepare meal with broccoli: cut broccoli into small sizes and sauté these pieces in butter, put few pinches of salt according to taste on a pan until broccoli gets cooked properly. These cooked pieces can be eaten directly or it can be added to salads.

2. Blackberries: Blackberry is a rich source of vitamins and other nutrients that does not have high content of potassium and therefore it does not affect hyperkalemia , rather it balances the level of potassium in blood.

  • Method to prepare blackberry juice - Take some blackberries and take out its juice, add sugar according to taste and add few ice cubes if wanted. Consuming blackberry juice on alternative days gives body the required nutrients along with balancing potassium.

3. Salmon: Salmon is a fish that can be a tasty and healthy option for people suffering from hyperkalemia as it has low potassium. It helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • Method to prepare salmon fry - Cover a piece of salmon fish with few pinches of salt, olive oil, pepper, parsley and chilly powder. Preheat a pan on medium flame, add olive oil and add the salmon fish into the pan once the olive oil gets heated up.

4. Strawberry: It is high in vitamins and low in potassium. It has antioxidant that is extremely beneficial for kidney function. Problem in kidney functioning is a reason of hyperkalemia and it can be healed by consuming strawberries.

  • Method to prepare strawberry smoothie - Add some strawberries, milk, two scoops of vanilla ice cream and honey if extra sweetness is wanted. Blend all these into a smoothie and enjoy the taste along with growing healthier.

5. Pineapple - Pineapples are low in potassium but high in other nutrients and micronutrients. This helps to maintain the nutrient balance of body and it also heals hyperkalemia. It maintains the electrolyte balance in body.

  • Method to prepare pineapple salad - Add pineapples in fruit salad along with some pepper and salt to add more flavour. Consuming ½ bowl of only pineapple can also be a wiser option.

6. Apple: As it is said, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’, consuming ½ bowl of apple regularly can cause no harm and it can maintain the proper balance of electrolytes in body. It can be added to the low potassium diet.

  • Apple meals - Fruit salad can have some slices or cubes of apples, apple pie, apple juice and apple tart can be another option.

Other low potassium food for Hyperkalemia:

People who suffer from hyperkalemia should reduce the consumption of potassium in their diet to lower down the level of potassium in blood. There are numbers of low potassium food that are recommended not consume more than ½ cup.

1. Fruits - Fruits are the main source of potassium and some of them have low potassium level like grapes, oranges, blueberries, watermelon, pears, peaches raspberries, plums and pineapples.

2. Vegetables - There are low potassium vegetables that can be cooked into meals and consumed for the purpose of balancing the level of potassium in blood. Vegetables like carrots, cabbage, asparagus, celery, corn, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, mushrooms, onion and parsley are good examples of low potassium vegetables.

3. Other foods - Other foods with low potassium level are bread, cookies, pasta, noodles, rice and cakes.

Hyperkalemia is not a very serious medical condition because it can be healed by maintaining a good diet that is low in potassium. It can lead to serious consequences if proper measure of consuming low potassium concentrated food is not taken.
