Nails are one of the mirrors that help in revealing a general health condition. Therefore, it is significant to recognize the signs of healthy nails as well as abnormalities that could indicate a medical issue. Healthy nails enhance the outer beauty and unpleasant nails signify major health issues. It is believed that the eyes are a window to the soul; however, nails offer an important glimpse into the overall health.

Signs and Symptoms of Nail Abnormalities:

1) Yellow Nails: Nails generally turn yellow with age. But it could also be the cause of nail lacquers or acrylic nails. Excessive use of acrylic nails and nail paints may harm the nail resulting in a color change. Another reason is excessive smoking that stains nails and gives them a yellowish shade. Therefore, it is important to spare some time for a salon so that your nails get a chance to recover.

2) Dry, cracked, or brittle nails: This is very prominent among people. Brittle nails are the result of dryness on the nail plate. These mostly happen due to swimming, excessive use of nail paints and nail paint removers, frequent exposure to detergent or soaps, or just by living in a low humid environment.

Other causes of dry, brittle, and cracked nails are aging and the use of chemicals. However, if a person is dealing with hypothyroidism, they may notice brittle nails which are a matter of concern, and immediate consultancy with the concerned doctor is important.

3) Clubbing: Many a times, people notice that their fingers are swelling and the nails become curved or rounded. These could be a sign of liver or kidney disease.

4) White spots: White spots are often the result of trauma such as if the finger strikes against something harsh or sharp. White spots on nails also indicate a calcium deficiency.

5) Severely bitten nails: Excessive nail-biting or picking at the skin around the nails are signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, psychiatric medicine is helpful to treat OCD related nail-biting.

6) Dark stripes or a painful growth: Dark stripes or painful growth of nails are a serious indication that signifies a severe underlying health condition. Melanoma is one severe skin cancer that develops black lines or stripes to appear on the nails.

Foods that make your Nails Stronger and Healthy

Nail health can be a pretty strong indicator of overall health. The abundance of nutrients in foods can help the nails, taking them from dry and brittle to healthy and stronger.

  • Chicken: Like muscles, protein is also vital for a nail’s health. Nails are made up of protein. So adding more protein to the diet will help in keeping the nails in top shape. Chicken is a great source for the same.
  • Fruits and berries: Plenty of fruits and berries add nutrients and vitamins to the diet. Blueberries contain high antioxidant properties of all fruits that provides a sweet treat to the fingertips.
