1. Nasal Breathing: There comes a time when some of the asthmatic patients realize that after a small walk they start inhaling oxygen by their mouth. The problem lies here; intake of oxygen through mouth instead of the nose. Nasal breathing provides the most efficient path to inhale adequate amount of oxygen as it ensures deeper breathing. Deep breathing removes stress and helps cardiovascular function.


  • Sit straight. Fold your legs near a window, balcony or terrace that will provide fresh air and close your eyes. Inhale and exhale oxygen slowly and deeply through your nose.
  • For practicing this, you don’t need to be empty stomach. It is recommended to do this in the morning to get more effective results.

2. Pap worth Method: This method is used by respiratory physiotherapists to control and correct breathing. It is the practice of relaxed breathing through abdomen and not the chest. It teaches which muscles to be used while breathing and avoids fast breathing. Reduction of reliance on medication is also one of the vital cause to practice Pap worth method of breathing.

4. Progressive Relaxation Technique: In the 1930s, an American physician introduced an anxiety reduction technique which is said to be Progressive relaxation technique. It is more like a meditation process bringing stress level down and enhancing breathing capacity of an individual. To practice this technique one needs no equipments or consultation.


  • You need to lie on the floor comfortably and then take few deep breaths.
  • Breathe in will tense the muscles of your feet and breath out will relax the muscles in your feet.

5. Diaphragmatic Breathing: One of the most prominent muscles that assist in breathing is the diaphragm. This breathing technique helps to strengthen it. It serves as the basis for all the meditation and relaxation techniques, also known as belly breathing. Practicing it will maintain your heart rate and blood pressure. An asthma patient’s lungs tend to reduce elasticity which will prevent respiratory function from working effectively. This will help in force out the air buildup in your lungs.


  • You need to sit in a comfortable position or may lie flat on the floor and relax your shoulder.
  • Put one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Inhale through your nose for a few seconds and store it in the stomach. While practicing this kind of exercise, make sure your stomach is moving outwards and the chest remains comparatively still.
  • Now make your lips like drinking water from straw and while pressing your stomach exhale the air from the mouth slowly.
