What is Metabolic Syndrome? Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of around 5 metabolic disorders like:

1. Abdominal obesity - High waist circumference - More than 40 inch in men and 35 inch in women
2. High blood pressure- More than 130mm Hg (upper) and 85 mm Hg (lower)
3. High blood sugar - Fasting glucose more than 100mg/DL
4. High serum triglycerides - Greater than 150 mg/dL of blood
5. Low serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) - More than 40 mg/dL in men or less than 50 mg/dL in women.

A patient is diagnosed with metabolic syndrome when they have 3 or more of the above metabolic disorders. The above disorders are greatly affected due to the lifestyle people follow now-a-days and can be greatly controlled by living a healthy lifestyle which includes diet and exercise along with proper medication as prescribed by the doctors.

Risk factors and causes:

The impairment of the metabolism is the great factor which causes the metabolic disorders. They are greatly caused as a result of genetic factor or lifestyle of the person. Some other factors that influence the metabolic disorders are:

1. Age - higher with increasing age
2. Dietary intake - regular intake of food high in saturated fat, trans fat, and sugar
3. Genetic abnormalities - Family genetics increases the risk of disorders like high blood sugar or high blood pressure
4. Overweight and obesity - people having body tendency to gain weight
5. Sedentary lifestyle

Symptoms of Metabolic Disorder:

As it is a cluster of 5 medical conditions hence the symptoms vary from condition to condition. The conditions are linked to each other and trigger each other. Example- Obesity will trigger another condition like elevated triglycerides, high blood sugar or high blood pressure etc.


Blood test helps determine the cluster of metabolic syndrome.

Different tested done are fasting blood triglycerides, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and fasting glucose level. Any of the 3 tests above the normal level are diagnosed as metabolic syndrome.


The goal of the treatment is to reduce the risk of further complications. Reducing the weight will help control the other disorders too. Lifestyle change, diet, exercise as well as proper medication will help control the disorder and the complication due to them. Some few tips are:

1. Healthy Diet - eat a diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. 2. Exercise - It is important to do physical activity regularly as it will reduce the blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. 3.
