Soft Tissue Sarcoma: Types, Symptoms And Treatment

25 September, 2020 Ankita Singh

Soft tissues are tissues that do not harden by ossification or calcification like bones or teeth. These tissues are found throughout the body. There are several types of soft tissues such as fat, muscle, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, nerves, etc.
There are several functions of soft tissues like:
1. Surrounding, supporting and connecting, organs, and other body parts.
2. Giving shape and structure to the body
3. Moving fluids (blood, lymph) within the body
4. Store energy

Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Sarcoma is a type of cancer that starts in either bone or soft tissue. Soft tissue sarcoma starts in soft tissues such as fat, muscle blood vessels, etc. Most of the soft tissue sarcoma starts in the leg or hand but it can also start in the head, neck, abdomen, or internal organs. Types Of Soft Tissue Sarcoma

There are over 50 types of soft tissue sarcoma. Some of them are:

Adult fibrosarcoma: This often affects fibrous tissues of legs, arms, or trunk. It is mostly found in adults (hence the name), but it can also occur in infants and teens.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma: This type of soft tissue mostly starts in the legs and mostly affects young adults.

Angiosarcoma: It either starts in blood vessels or lymph vessels. It can start in a body part that had been previously treated with radiation.

Clear cell sarcoma: It mostly starts in the tendons of arms and legs. It resembles melanoma (cancer that starts in melanocytes).

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor: It mostly develops in the abdomen and found in teens and young adults.

Epithelioid sarcoma: It starts under the skin of hands or legs and mostly affects teens and young adults. Buy medicines online in Delhi from 3MEDS.

Fibromyxoid sarcoma: It mostly starts as a painless growth in the trunk, arms or legs and affects teens and young adults. It is slow-growing cancer.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor: It starts in the digestive tract.

Kaposi sarcoma: It develops in the lining of lymph or blood vessels.

Leiomyosarcoma: It mostly develops in the abdomen but can also start in the arms, legs, or uterus.

Malignant mesenchyma: It has features of at least 2-3 types of sarcoma and is very rare.

Myxofibrosarcoma: It is more common to find more than one tumor in this type of soft tissue sarcoma. It is more common in the hands and legs of older people.

Rhabdomyosarcoma: It is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma that occurs in kids.

Synovial sarcoma: This type of soft tissue sarcoma develops around joints like the hip, knee, ankle, and shoulder. Though it is more common in children and young adults, older people can also get affected by it.

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma: It is more likely to develop in legs or arms. It is more common in older adults. It can metastasize to other body parts too.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: It is slow-growing cancer that usually develops in the fibrous tissue of the trunk, arms, or legs. It rarely metastasizes.

Hemangioendothelioma: Itis blood vessel cancer that grows slowly.  It can originate from soft tissues or internal organs like the liver and lungs.

Infantile fibrosarcoma: It is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma that develops in children under the age of one. It rarely metastasizes.

Symptoms Of Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Some common symptoms of soft tissue sarcoma are:
1. A lump anywhere on your body or an old lump that started growing recently.
2. Abdominal pain (maybe a swollen belly too)
3. Blood in stool or vomit.
4. Black or greasy stool.

Treatment Of Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Treatment of soft tissue sarcoma depends upon factors like shape, size, type, and location of the tumor/s. There are four main types of treatment used for treating soft tissue sarcoma. The doctor may suggest a combination of treatments to treat the patient.

The four main treatments for soft tissue sarcoma are:

Surgery: In this treatment, the cancerous tumor and some healthy cells/tissues surrounding the tumor are removed. If cancer has spread in hand or legs the doctor can suggest you take radiation or chemotherapy to shrink the tumor to avoid amputation.
Radiation therapy: A high energy radiation is used to kill the cancerous cells in radiation therapy. It can also be used to just shrink the tumor prior to the surgery or after the surgery to kill the remaining cancerous cells.
Chemotherapy: Medicines are used in chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells. Medicines are given either through pills or through veins. Buy cancer medicines at a low price from 3MEDS.
Targeted drug treatment: In targeted therapy too medicines are used. These medicines target specific genes that are involved in the growth and survival of the cancer cells.

Soft tissue sarcomas are a rare type of cancer tumor. There are many subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma. It can develop in any part of the body but is most commonly found in limbs. It needs proper diagnosis as most soft tissue sarcoma appears as harmless tumors.
