What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a type of eye disease, a condition where one's retina (a part of an eye) deteriorates, mostly with age. Hence, it's also called as Age-related Macular degeneration or AMD. The downside of this disease is, it can severely impair one's vision.

The deterioration or, degeneration takes place in the macula. Therefore, the disease is called Macular degeneration. Now, let's learn more about the macula.

What is the Macula and what it does?

The macula is near the center of the retina (the light-sensing nerve tissue at the back of the eye). The function of the macula is -

  • Process a sharp and clear image.
  • Helps one to see and read things with great details.

Difference Between Dry and wet Macular Degeneration?

As the heading suggests, there are two types of macular degeneration-

  • Dry macular degeneration and
  • Wet macular degeneration

Now, let's get a deeper understanding of both of them. We'll start with dry macular degeneration.

Dry Macular Degeneration:

In this form of macular degeneration, yellow deposits called "drusen" start collecting in the macula and, as a result, the person's vision starts getting dimmer. Few tiny drusen won't hamper your eyesight at first, but once these multiplies and expand in size, they'll distort your visual capacity and esp your reading ability. The other two adverse effects when dry macular degeneration goes out of control are -

  • The light-sensitive cells get thinner and ultimately die.
  • One starts getting blind spots in the center of the vision and sometimes even permanent loss of central vision.

Wet Macular Degeneration:

In wet macular, the blood vessels beneath one's macular start leaking blood and fluids inside the retina. As a result, one starts seeing straight lines as wavy and distorted. The bleeding finally leads to the formation of scars. The adverse effects are the same as dry macular degeneration.

Are there, any other Forms of Macular Degeneration?

Yes, there is another type that affects young people and children and is known as - Juvenile macular degeneration or Stargardt disease.
